The person who asks about a stuck career has usually been in the same grade, at the same pay band, doing roughly the same work, for five years or more, and has watched people who joined later go past. The question they ask is “what is wrong with my chart”, and the honest answer, most of the time, is nothing permanent. Stagnation in a career has four causes in the chart. One is a period, and periods end. One is a placement, and placements have periods that relieve them. One is a transit, which is the shortest of the four. And one is the wrong field, which is the only cause that needs a decision rather than patience. Telling them apart is the whole of the reading.

Stagnation is read from the running major period and its connection to the tenth and eleventh houses first, from the condition of the tenth lord and the tenth house second, from Saturn’s and the nodes’ transits third, and from the match between the field and the chart last.

Period or placement: the first question
Before anything else, ask whether the career has ever moved. A person who rose steadily for eight years and then stopped is almost always in a period: the dasha has passed from planets with a stake in the tenth and eleventh houses to a planet without one, and the career is holding position until the sequence returns. A person whose career has never moved, who started at a level and stayed there through two major periods, is looking at a placement or at the wrong field, because a supportive period has already come and gone and did not deliver. The dasha table settles the question in a minute, and the two answers lead to different readings and different advice, which is why the question comes first.
The period causes
The commonest cause of a stuck career is a major period belonging to a planet with no connection to the tenth house, the eleventh house or their lords. Careers move in the periods of the planets that carry them, and a nineteen-year Saturn period or an eighteen-year Rahu period that holds no career connection is a long time to hold position. The native has done nothing wrong. The planet in charge has other business, and its sub-periods, one after another, bring the family, the property, the marriage, the health, and not the grade. The sub-periods inside such a major period that do belong to career significators bring the small movements, the lateral shift, the certification, the pay revision without the title, and those are the years to make the most of.
The second cause is a run of sub-periods belonging to the sixth, eighth and twelfth lords. The sixth lord’s sub-period is service without rise, the eighth lord’s is blockage and abrupt change, the twelfth lord’s is being sidelined. In Vimshottari order these can fall consecutively, and three such sub-periods in a row is seven or eight years of a career that does not move, inside a major period that looked good on paper.
The third is Ketu’s major period, or a Ketu sub-period of any length, with Ketu placed in the tenth, the sixth or the twelfth. Ketu withdraws the native’s attachment to the work, and a career does not move when the person carrying it has stopped wanting it to. This is often mistaken for laziness by the family and for depression by the native. It is a period, and it ends.
The fourth is the wrong planet’s period for the field. A Mars career, engineering or construction or the uniformed services, held through a Mercury or Venus period, is a career run by a planet that does not do that kind of work. The native continues, competently, and nothing grows, because the period lord has no interest in the field. This is the cause that shades into the wrong-field cause below, and the difference is whether the field will move when the period changes.
The placement causes
Saturn in the tenth house, or aspecting it, is the placement most often blamed for stagnation and least often responsible for it. Saturn in the tenth gives a slow career, with a hard start and a late peak, and a person with this placement at thirty-five who has not yet risen is on schedule rather than stuck. It becomes stagnation only when Saturn is also afflicted, or when the native’s expectations are calibrated to a Jupiter career they do not have.
Ketu in the tenth is the placement of indifference to status, and it produces either a career the native does not push or a career in a field where pushing does not apply. The stagnation here is real from the outside and often not felt from the inside, and the reading has to establish which before advising anything.
The tenth lord’s placement is the structural cause. The tenth lord in the sixth gives a service ceiling: the native rises to a certain level in the structure and stops there, because the placement joins the career to service rather than to authority. The tenth lord in the eighth gives a career of interruptions and blocked ascents, with the rise coming late, through research, inheritance of a role, or a field that rewards depth. The tenth lord in the twelfth gives a career in obscurity, back-office, institutional or foreign, in which the native does the work and someone else stands in the light, and it moves when the native goes abroad or into an institution built for that.
The tenth lord’s condition is the fourth placement cause. A combust tenth lord gives the career whose credit goes upward: the native does the manager’s work and the manager gets the title, for as long as the combustion is not relieved by a benefic aspect or a period that lifts it. A debilitated tenth lord without cancellation gives a career that needs rebuilding every few years, and the cancellation rules in the Neecha Bhanga guide should be checked before this is concluded, because cancellation is common. A retrograde tenth lord gives a career of returns to earlier levels and earlier employers. The nodal axis across the fourth and tenth, the pattern treated in Kaal Sarp dosha and career, gives ambition without traction until the nodal periods pass.
The lagna and the third house are the fifth. A weak lagna lord gives no push, and a weak third house gives no initiative, and a strong tenth house on top of either produces the person who deserves the rise, knows it, and never asks for it.
The transit causes
Saturn’s transit over the tenth house or the tenth lord stalls a career for two and a half years, and the middle third of that is the worst of it; the pattern is treated in Saturn transit through the tenth house. Sade Sati, Saturn’s seven and a half years over the natal Moon, stalls a career as part of stalling everything, and its central stretch is where most people ask this question. Ketu’s transit over the tenth house stalls through indifference for eighteen months, and Rahu’s transit over the fourth, opposite the tenth, stalls through distraction: the home, the property, the family taking the energy the career needs. These are the shortest causes and the easiest to date, and when the stall began with one of these transits it ends with it.
The wrong-field cause
Some stuck careers belong to strong charts. The tenth lord is dignified, the dasha is a career significator’s, the transits are supportive, and nothing moves, because the native is working in a field that belongs to a different planet from the one the chart put in charge. A Jupiter tenth lord in a sales job. A Mercury Amatyakaraka in a factory. A D10 lagna ruled by Venus in a chart whose owner became an accountant because the family said so. The chart supports work; it does not support this work, and the supportive periods pass with their energy going into the wrong container.
The signs are a good chart with a flat history, an Amatyakaraka and a D10 that describe a different kind of work from the one being done, and a native who is competent and bored. The workplace cause
Occasionally the chart is fine, the period is fine, the field is right, and the stall is a person: the manager who will not sign the form, the organisation that has frozen the grade. In the chart this shows as an afflicted seventh house, the tenth from the tenth and the house of the employer, and as Sun-Saturn tension during the stuck years. When this is the cause, the career moves the moment the native changes employer, which is the one situation in which the job change is the cure rather than the symptom.
Six questions that tell you which one you have
- Has the career ever moved? If yes, look first at the period. If never, look first at the placement and the field.
- Which major period is running, and does its lord rule, occupy or aspect the tenth or eleventh house? If not, the cause is the period, and the sub-periods of any career significator inside it are the years of small movement.
- Which sub-periods have the last five years been, and how many belonged to the sixth, eighth or twelfth lord? Three in a row is a stall by sequence.
- Where is the tenth lord, and is it combust, debilitated without cancellation, or retrograde? Any of these is a placement cause with its own relief conditions.
- Where is Saturn transiting, and where are the nodes? Saturn on the tenth or the Moon, Ketu on the tenth, or Rahu on the fourth date the stall and its end.
- Does the field match the planet in charge of the tenth, the Amatyakaraka and the D10 lagna lord? If the chart is strong and the history is flat, this is the cause, and the reading is about direction.
When it moves
A period cause ends when the sequence reaches a planet with a stake in the tenth or eleventh, and the movement usually comes in the first sub-period of the new major period, or in the first career significator’s sub-period inside it. The dasha boundary is the date to circle, and the career often begins moving in the year before it, as the incoming planet’s influence starts to show.
A placement cause is relieved by the period of the planet that relieves it: the benefic that aspects the combust tenth lord, the planet that cancels the debilitation, the ninth lord whose favour lifts a tenth lord in the sixth, the eleventh lord whose gains express a tenth lord in the eighth or twelfth. Placements do not go away. Their difficult expression yields to a period that gives them another outlet.
A transit cause ends when the transit does, and it can be dated to the month: Saturn leaving the tenth house or the sign of the tenth lord, Saturn leaving the sign after the natal Moon, the nodes moving off the fourth-tenth axis. Movement follows within the year, sharpest when Jupiter’s next transit touches the tenth or eleventh.
A wrong-field cause moves when the native moves, and the chart’s contribution is to name the direction and the window, which is the period of the planet that governs the right field, read from the dasha table.
In every case, the trigger for the actual rise is Jupiter transiting the tenth or eleventh house or aspecting the tenth lord inside a supportive sub-period, and a native who knows the sub-period is coming can spend the eighteen months before it making the rise easy to give.
What does not move it
Remedies do not reorder the Vimshottari sequence. A period of a planet with no stake in the career remains that period whatever is worn, chanted or donated, and a reading that offers a remedy as the cure for a dasha is selling the native the wrong thing. Remedies have a place in steadying the mind through a hard stretch, and that is their honest use.
Changing employer inside a non-significator period does not move the career either; it reproduces the stall in a new building, with the loss of the seniority the native had built. The job change that cures stagnation is the one made into a supportive period, or out of an employer that is the cause.
And waiting passively through a supportive period wastes it. When the reading says the sequence is about to reach a career planet, the useful response is preparation: the certification, the visible project, the conversation with the manager, the application. Supportive periods reward what is already in motion.
A worked chart: twelve years in one grade
A Taurus lagna chart, identifying detail removed. For this lagna Saturn rules the ninth and tenth and is the yogakaraka, Jupiter rules the eighth and eleventh, Venus the lagna and sixth, Mercury the second and fifth, Mars the seventh and twelfth, the Sun the fourth, the Moon the third. The Sun sits in Leo, its own sign, in the fourth, with Saturn, the tenth lord, combust beside it. Venus is in Cancer in the third. Mercury is exalted in Virgo in the fifth. Jupiter sits in Sagittarius, its own sign, in the eighth, aspecting the fourth. Mars is exalted in Capricorn in the ninth. The Moon is in Pisces in the eleventh. Rahu is in Scorpio in the seventh, Ketu in Taurus in the lagna.
He is an engineer, and his career had moved once, early, and then not at all for twelve years. The first question settled the reading: it had moved, so the period came first. Rahu’s major period had begun in his mid-twenties, Rahu sitting in the seventh with no connection to the tenth or eleventh, and its sub-periods had run in order. Jupiter’s sub-period, the eleventh lord’s, brought the one promotion, and Jupiter’s eighth-house placement took the momentum back within a year, as an eighth-lord placement does. Saturn’s sub-period, the tenth lord’s, combust in the fourth, gave three years of doing the department head’s work while the department head held the title, which is the combust tenth lord’s signature exactly. Mercury’s sub-period, exalted, brought a certification and a pay revision with no change of grade. Venus’s sub-period, the lagna and sixth lord in the third, brought a lateral move to another company in the same grade, which changed the building and nothing else. The Sun’s sub-period, the fourth lord in its own sign with the combust Saturn, brought his father’s illness and a posting near home. Twelve years, one grade, every year of it legible in the table.
The reading pointed to the change of major period. Jupiter’s period was next, Jupiter being the eleventh lord in its own sign and, by its aspect on the fourth, the one benefic relieving the combust tenth lord. The first sub-period of a Jupiter major period is Jupiter’s own, and the reading said the rise would come in it, with Jupiter’s transit over his tenth house as the trigger. He was promoted two grades in that sub-period, to the level he had been working at for a decade, with Jupiter transiting his tenth. The placement had not changed. The combust Saturn was still combust. The sequence had reached the planet that could give it an outlet, and the twelve years turned out to have been a period, not a verdict.
What the reading cannot do
It cannot judge performance. A stuck career can be a period or it can be a person who has stopped learning, and the chart shows the first clearly and the second only by implication. It cannot shorten a period; it can say when the period ends and what to do until then. It depends on the birth time, since the whole reading turns on which planet rules the tenth, and a lagna error of one sign gives a different tenth lord and a different cause; where the reading does not match the history, rectification comes before further prediction. And it should not be used to tell a person that they are stuck because their chart is weak. Most stuck careers belong to ordinary charts in ordinary periods, and the useful thing the reading offers is the date the period ends and the direction to face when it does.
