Kulik Kaal Sarp Dosha: Rahu in the 2nd House, Ketu in the 8th

Kulik Kaal Sarp dosha describes a chart with Rahu in the second house, Ketu in the eighth, and all seven planets gathered on one side of the line between them. The second house holds family, speech, food and the money a person accumulates; the eighth holds what is shared, hidden or inherited, sudden changes, research and the deeper questions of life. So the Kulik axis runs between what is visibly one’s own and what lies beneath the surface. It is named after Kulika, one of the eight great serpents of Indian tradition. People who find the kulik kaal sarp yoga in their chart usually meet it through warnings about money and health, and this article replaces those warnings with what the chart actually shows: how rare the full formation is, why the lagna settles so much in Kulik charts, what Rahu in the 2nd house and Ketu in the 8th house tend to describe, which planets they work for in each ascendant, the KP check, timing, and two charts from practice.

For the formation in general, and the reasons many senior astrologers doubt its classical standing, see the complete guide to Kaal Sarp dosha; each type is summarised briefly in the overview of all twelve Kaal Sarp types. The first type, Anant Kaal Sarp dosha, and the reverse of this axis, Karkotak Kaal Sarp dosha, are covered separately.

Conventions used. A chart counts as Kaal Sarp only if all seven planets lie between the nodes by degree, the strict test in the site’s main guide, and the type follows the whole-sign house of Rahu. Nodes are mean, the ayanamsa Lahiri, as Jagannatha Hora sets them. The numbers come from Swiss Ephemeris samples of births timed at random between 1950 and 2010 and cast for Delhi, with 250,000 births screened to collect enough Kulik charts to study.

What Kulik Kaal Sarp dosha is

With Rahu in the second house, Ketu is always in the eighth, the two nodes facing each other across the chart. When every planet from the Sun to Saturn falls in the same half, the chart is read as Kulik kalsarp dosh in the popular scheme, the second of the twelve types. The naming of the types after serpents is itself a modern convention, and the site’s main guide explains why no classical text, Parashara’s included, sets out the formation in the shape it is marketed today.

What the formation does is concentrate attention on the line joining the two nodes. Rahu magnifies the house it occupies and brings appetite, novelty and sometimes excess; Ketu drains the house it occupies of attachment and brings detachment, insight and sometimes loss of interest. With every planet to one side, those two houses tend to become recurring themes: a strong, sometimes restless relationship with money, family and speech on one side, and a deep, sometimes uneasy relationship with the hidden, the shared and the sudden on the other.

How rare it is

Strict Kaal Sarp formations of any type appear in about 7 percent of births, and each type takes roughly a twelfth of those, so a full Kulik formation belongs to about one birth in 170. Counting the partial formations that many calculators include raises the figure for all types to around 20 percent of charts, and Kulik to a little under 2 percent. Like every type, it clusters in particular years, when the slow planets happen to lie on one side of the nodes, and within those years it comes and goes as the Moon crosses the axis every fortnight or so.

Why the lagna decides so much in Kulik charts

In a Kulik chart the lagna is never on the nodal axis; it sits one sign before Rahu, which puts it on a fixed side. When the planets run from Rahu towards Ketu through houses 3 to 7, the ascending form, the lagna is always outside the hemmed half; when they run the other way through houses 9 to 1, the descending form, the lagna is always inside it. In the sample 43 percent of Kulik charts were ascending and 57 percent descending.

That matters because a lagna outside the hemming appears among the rules for cancelling Kaal Sarp dosha, and some astrologers treat it as breaking the formation. By that view every ascending Kulik chart, more than four in ten, is already cancelled. Others judge only the seven planets and would not agree, but the point is worth knowing before accepting that a Kulik label applies to you in full.

Rahu in the 2nd: money, family and speech

Rahu in the 2nd house tends to give a strong appetite for resources and security, and often an unconventional route to them: foreign earnings, new industries, trading, or income from sources the family did not expect. Speech can be persuasive, sharp or unusual, and food habits and family customs are often ones the person departs from. The family itself can be a source of both ambition and friction. Rahu in the 2nd house covers the placement in general.

The appetite is the point to understand. Rahu in the second rarely leaves a person indifferent to money; it can drive real accumulation, or it can drive spending as fast as earning, and which one dominates depends on the planets Rahu works for and the dasha running at the time.

Ketu in the 8th: the shared, the hidden and the sudden

Ketu in the 8th house tends to bring detachment from what is shared or inherited, a natural pull toward research, investigation, psychology, healing or the occult, and an ability to handle crisis calmly. People with it often have unusual insight into what others hide, and a relaxed, sometimes indifferent attitude to joint money, inheritance and in-laws’ affairs. Ketu in the 8th house sets out the placement.

The eighth is also the house of sudden events, so this Ketu is often blamed for shocks. It can mark periods when something ends abruptly, but it more often shows as the capacity to recover and to learn from those endings, which is why many people with it end up in work that helps others through crisis.

Which planets Rahu and Ketu work for

Rahu and Ketu act for the lords of the signs they occupy, as Rahu and Ketu as agents explains, and in a Kulik chart that means Rahu works for the second lord and Ketu for the eighth. The table shows the signs and lords for each ascendant, which is the first thing to check when reading this axis.

AscendantRahu in the 2nd: sign and its lordKetu in the 8th: sign and its lord
AriesTaurus, ruled by VenusScorpio, ruled by Mars
TaurusGemini, ruled by MercurySagittarius, ruled by Jupiter
GeminiCancer, ruled by the MoonCapricorn, ruled by Saturn
CancerLeo, ruled by the SunAquarius, ruled by Saturn
LeoVirgo, ruled by MercuryPisces, ruled by Jupiter
VirgoLibra, ruled by VenusAries, ruled by Mars
LibraScorpio, ruled by MarsTaurus, ruled by Venus
ScorpioSagittarius, ruled by JupiterGemini, ruled by Mercury
SagittariusCapricorn, ruled by SaturnCancer, ruled by the Moon
CapricornAquarius, ruled by SaturnLeo, ruled by the Sun
AquariusPisces, ruled by JupiterVirgo, ruled by Mercury
PiscesAries, ruled by MarsLibra, ruled by Venus

A well-placed second lord gives Rahu’s appetite a productive channel; a weak or afflicted one tends to make the same appetite restless. The eighth lord does the same for Ketu. In KP the nodes’ star lords and any planets conjoined with or aspecting them add to that picture, and sometimes outweigh the sign lord.

Money: what Kulik does and does not mean

The kulik kaal sarp dosha effects most often quoted are financial loss and family quarrels. The formation cannot decide those questions by itself. In KP, income and savings are judged from the sub-lords of the 2nd and 11th cusps, as wealth through the 2nd and 11th cusps sets out: signification of the 2nd, 6th, 10th and 11th houses supports gains, the 8th and 12th point to losses and outflow when they dominate, and the 5th brings speculation, which can go either way. A Kulik chart whose 2nd and 11th sub-lords favour gain accumulates, often through Rahu’s unconventional routes; one whose sub-lords lean to 8 and 12 has to manage outflow carefully, as any chart with those significations would.

Health and longevity fears

The second and eighth houses both appear in classical longevity calculations, and some writers use that to attach frightening claims about health or lifespan to Kulik charts. Kaal Sarp dosha does not diagnose illness and does not predict lifespan, and no responsible reading uses it that way. Where the eighth house is involved in health at all, it describes vulnerability periods and recovery in combination with many other factors, and the right response to any health concern is a doctor, not a ritual. For most people with this axis, the eighth-house Ketu shows far more in their interests, research, psychology, the hidden side of things, than in their bodies.

Partial Kulik formations

About half of Kulik charts in the sample, 51 percent, had at least one planet sharing the second or eighth sign with a node, which the site’s main guide treats as a partial formation; the reasoning is set out in partial Kaal Sarp dosha. Combined with the four ascending Kulik charts in ten whose lagna lies outside the hemming, that leaves clean, full formations with the lagna inside as a minority of the charts that carry the label. The axis still matters in all of them; the drama attached to the name applies to far fewer.

When the Kulik axis is active

The axis speaks loudest in the periods of the nodes. Rahu Mahadasha tends to bring second-house matters forward, money, family and speech, and Ketu Mahadasha the eighth-house themes of letting go, research and transformation, with shorter versions in node sub-periods. Transiting Rahu comes back to its natal degree at intervals of roughly eighteen and a half years, in the late teens, the late thirties and the middle fifties, and each return runs the nodes across the second and eighth houses again, often coinciding with a turning point in family money or shared resources.

Plenty of kulik kaal sarp dosha remedies are advertised, from pujas to gemstones. Families who choose a ritual for reasons of faith lose nothing by it, but nothing in the chart makes one necessary, and the site’s review of Kaal Sarp remedies looks at which claims hold up.

Two charts with the Kulik axis

A woman with Taurus rising, details altered. Rahu is in Gemini in the second and Ketu in Sagittarius in the eighth, with all seven planets in houses 3 to 7: an ascending Kulik formation, so her lagna lies outside the hemming. Rahu works for Mercury, her second lord, and her 2nd and 11th cusp sub-lords signify the 2nd, 6th and 11th houses. Her Moon in Hasta left six years of the Moon’s period, then Mars’s seven, and Rahu’s eighteen ran from thirteen to thirty-one. At twenty-two, in Rahu-Mercury, she took a trading job in Dubai and saved steadily through the rest of Rahu’s period. At thirty-four, in Jupiter-Saturn, with Jupiter her eighth lord and Saturn her yogakaraka, she settled a long family property dispute by giving up her share and began training as a psychotherapist.

A man with Scorpio rising, details altered. Rahu is in Sagittarius in the second and Ketu in Gemini in the eighth, with all seven planets in houses 9 to 1: a descending Kulik formation with the lagna inside. Rahu works for Jupiter, his second lord, and his 2nd and 11th sub-lords signify the 2nd, 6th and 11th houses. His Moon in Purva Phalguni left ten years of Venus’s period, then the Sun’s six, the Moon’s ten and Mars’s seven, and Rahu’s eighteen from thirty-three. He qualified as an actuary at twenty-seven, in the Mahadasha of Mars, his lagna lord. At thirty-six, in Rahu-Jupiter, he took over his uncle’s insurance agency when his uncle retired, eighth-house business in every sense, and by forty, in Rahu-Saturn, the agency’s book had tripled.

Neither lost money to the formation. In both, the second-house Rahu drove accumulation through the lord it served, and the eighth-house Ketu showed in the kind of work each chose.

Frequently asked questions

What is Kulik Kaal Sarp dosha?

The second of the twelve Kaal Sarp types: Rahu in the 2nd, Ketu in the 8th, every planet in one half of the chart. Its theme is the pull between one’s own money, family and words and what is shared, hidden or sudden.

How common is Kulik Kaal Sarp dosha?

Rare in its full form: roughly one birth in 170 under the strict degree test. Calculators that also count partial formations show it in something under 2 percent of charts.

Does Kulik Kaal Sarp dosha cause financial loss?

Not by itself. In KP, income and savings are judged from the 2nd and 11th cusp sub-lords; signification of 2, 6, 10 and 11 supports gains and of 8 and 12 points to outflow. Many Kulik charts accumulate well.

Does Kulik Kaal Sarp dosha affect health or longevity?

Kaal Sarp dosha does not diagnose illness or predict lifespan. Any health concern belongs with a doctor; the eighth-house Ketu in these charts shows far more often in interests such as research and psychology.

Why does the lagna matter so much in Kulik Kaal Sarp dosha?

The lagna always sits one sign before Rahu, so in the ascending form, about four Kulik charts in ten, it lies outside the hemmed half. Some astrologers treat a lagna outside the hemming as a cancellation.

What are the remedies for Kulik Kaal Sarp dosha?

No remedy is required. A puja done in faith is a personal choice. The practical work lies in the matters the axis highlights: managing money deliberately and handling family and shared resources with care.

When does Kulik Kaal Sarp dosha show its effects?

Chiefly during the eighteen years of Rahu’s Mahadasha and the seven of Ketu’s, in node sub-periods, and in the years when transiting Rahu returns to the second house.
