This is the one page in the cluster that begins somewhere other than the chart, because where a relationship is a danger, the chart is not the first thing. The first thing is safety. If there is fear in the house, if there has been a hand raised or a threat made, if money, movement or contact with other people is being controlled, the people to speak to are a person you trust outside the relationship, a helpline, a lawyer, and where there is immediate danger the police, and the sentence this page exists to say is that no reading, no period, no transit and no remedy is a reason to stay in a place where there is fear. An astrologer who times a reconciliation into a house the chart shows to be dangerous has done a harm the chart warned against, and this site does not do it. After that, and only after it, comes what the chart can say, which is real and limited: the difference between heat and harm in the seventh, so that a hot marriage is not mistaken for a dangerous one and a dangerous one is not excused as hot; the signatures of the partner who harms, read from their own chart and never as a verdict on conduct; the signatures of the native who keeps choosing one, read as a pattern and a season, not a fault; the exit seasons in which leaving is possible and supported, which is the one timing this page gives; the pull back, which the nodes explain and the chart does not excuse; and what a reading refuses to do.
It belongs to the complete relationship astrology guide. The hot marriage that is not a harm is the Mars page, Mars and Relationships; the separation and divorce inside a marriage, their signs and their timing, are the troubled-marriage pages, beginning with the troubled marriage guide and separation timing; and the months after leaving are read in Moving On After a Breakup.
Conventions used. Parashari astrology, whole-sign houses, Lahiri ayanamsa, Vimshottari dasha; the seventh as the partner, the sixth as the enemy and the dispute, the eighth as the danger and the crisis, the twelfth as the departure and the isolation, the Moon as the native’s capacity to see; Mars, Saturn and Rahu together as the affliction that this page reads and Mars alone as the heat it does not. Safety is read before astrology in every case. A chart reads tendency and season and never conduct, so nothing here says that a person is or will be violent; the other person’s chart is read with their knowledge or not at all, and the reading gives no timing for reconciliation where the chart shows harm.

Safety first, then the chart: which seasons make leaving possible, and what the chart will not be used for.
A relationship consultation in this situation begins with the safety question and stops there if the answer requires it; then it reads your chart for the difference between heat and harm, the pattern behind the choosing if there is one, and the exit seasons in your dasha table in which leaving is possible and supported, and it refuses to time a return.

Before the chart: the safety line
The line is drawn in plain words because the readers who most need it are often the ones least able to see it from inside. A relationship is a harm, and not a difficult one, when there is fear of the other person; when there has been violence or the threat of it; when money, movement, the phone or contact with family and friends are controlled; when the native has been made smaller over months and cannot say when it started; when children are being frightened. In any of those, the order is fixed: a person outside the relationship who can be told; a helpline, which in India includes the national women’s helpline and the emergency number, and elsewhere the equivalents; a lawyer, since the law protects and the protection has to be asked for; and, where the danger is immediate, the police and a door. The chart comes after all of that, and it comes as a map of seasons and not as a reason for anything. A reader who has recognised their situation in this paragraph should do the first thing on the list before finishing the page, and the page will still be here. The rest of it is written for that reader afterward, and for the reader who is not sure which kind of relationship they are in, which is the next section’s subject.
Heat against harm in the seventh house
The Mars page drew the line and this page holds to it. Heat is Mars in the seventh, Mars with Venus, Mars in a fire sign, the seventh lord with Mars: a partner who is a match, quarrels that are real and short, force in the bond and want in it, the couple who fight and make up and are still married at seventy. Heat is a quality with a season, and the Mars page reads it as such. Harm is a different thing in the chart as in a life, and the chart shows it as a combination and not as a planet: Mars with Saturn and Rahu together on the seventh or the fourth, or afflicting the seventh lord, is the cruelty that is cold and obsessive and forceful at once, and it is read in Mars with Saturn, Mars with Rahu and Saturn with Rahu as the three pairs that make it; the sixth lord on the seventh, in the sixth lord in the seventh, is the partner as enemy; the eighth lord on the seventh, in the eighth lord in the seventh, is the partner as danger; and the seventh lord in the sixth or eighth, in the seventh lord in the sixth and the eighth, with the malefic combination, is the bond routed through the enemy’s or the danger’s house. The difference is the combination: one malefic is a quality, two are a strain, and Mars, Saturn and Rahu together on the relationship houses is the signature this page is about. A reading that calls every Mars in the seventh a threat has made the same mistake as one that calls a Mars-Saturn-Rahu seventh a passionate marriage, and both mistakes cost someone years.
The partner’s chart: signatures of the one who harms, and their limits
With the partner’s chart, read with their knowledge or, in this one case, from a native’s own need to understand what they have lived with, the signatures are the same combination on the partner’s side: Mars, Saturn and Rahu together on their first, their fourth or their seventh, or afflicting their Moon, with their Moon debilitated or in the eighth or twelfth and their sixth lord’s touch on any of it; the sub-periods of those planets are their dangerous seasons, and the reading can say which years were which. The limits are stated as plainly as the signatures. A chart reads tendency and season and never conduct, so no chart says that a person is or will be violent; a Mars-Saturn-Rahu seventh belongs to some people who have never raised a hand and are only hard to live with, and the reading that says “your husband’s chart shows he is abusive” has invented a fact from a tendency, which is a wrong done even to a man who is. What the partner’s chart can say is that the tendency is there, that its seasons are these, and that a native who has already experienced harm can expect the same seasons to be the hard ones; it cannot say that the harm will happen or will not, and it is never, on this site, used to reassure a native that a partner who has already harmed them will change in the next sub-period. The seasons of a partner’s chart are read for the native’s safety planning and for nothing else.
Your own chart: the signatures of vulnerability, read as seasons
The native’s own chart carries the relationship as it is met, and the seventh afflicted in the native’s chart by Mars, Saturn and Rahu, or the seventh lord in the sixth or eighth with the affliction, or the sixth or eighth lord on the seventh, is the native who meets harm in a partner, in the sub-periods of those planets, and who is safer than usual in the periods of the seventh lord’s dignity and Jupiter’s. The Moon in the native’s chart is the capacity to see it, and a debilitated, dark or eighth-house Moon, in the Moon in the eighth, or a twelfth-house Moon, in the Moon in the twelfth, is the native who cannot see from inside what everyone outside can see, which is a description and not a fault and is the next section’s subject. The twelfth lord on the seventh, or the seventh lord in the twelfth with the affliction, is the isolation, the relationship in which the native is cut off from their people, which is harm’s own house. These are read as seasons: the affliction’s sub-periods are the vulnerable years, the exit seasons below are the years leaving is possible, and a native who has the signatures and has not met the harm yet is told the seasons as a caution, in the sense that a person told which years their seventh is under strain chooses more carefully in them. The general reading of hard placements as conditions rather than sentences is in the page on interpreting difficult placements.
The native who keeps choosing the harmful partner
Some natives have chosen a harmful partner more than once, and they arrive asking what is wrong with them, and the chart’s answer is that the pattern is in the houses and the period and not in their worth. Venus with Rahu or Saturn, the seventh lord in the sixth or eighth, Mars-Saturn on the seventh, the Moon in the eighth: a chart with two of these is drawn to the intense, the controlling, the one who takes charge, because the seventh describes that partner and the fifth’s feeling recognises them, and the recognition is Rahu’s and the Ketu page’s sense of the already known. The reading of the pattern says three things. That it is a description of the seventh and not of the native’s character, and that the same seventh, in a Jupiter or seventh lord’s sub-period, chooses differently. That the choosing has seasons, and the harmful choices were made in the affliction’s sub-periods, and the next carrier sub-period is the one in which a different kind of partner is met, which the reading names. And that the pattern is one of the things a counsellor is for, alongside the chart and not instead of it, because a chart can name the season of a pattern and a person can help unmake it, and the two together are more than either. A native told “your seventh is afflicted, you will always choose badly” has been given a sentence, and this page is written against that sentence.
Eight signatures: heat, or harm
| Signature | As heat: a quality with a season | As harm: read with the safety line first |
|---|---|---|
| Mars in the 7th, alone or with Venus | The partner who is a match; real, short quarrels; desire | Not harm on its own; the Mars page reads it |
| Mars with Saturn on the 7th or 4th | Cold anger, the long silence, the frustrated want; a strain | Harm when Rahu joins or the 6th lord touches it: the cruelty that is cold |
| Mars with Rahu on the 7th or 5th | Impulsive heat, obsession, the pursuit that goes too far; a strain | Harm when Saturn joins: the obsession that controls |
| Mars, Saturn and Rahu together on the 7th, 4th or the 7th lord | Never merely heat | The signature this page is about; safety first, then the seasons |
| 6th lord on the 7th, or 7th lord in the 6th, with the affliction | The quarrelsome partner; the marriage with disputes | The partner as enemy; the legal season is the 6th lord’s |
| 8th lord on the 7th, or 7th lord in the 8th, with the affliction | The intense, transforming bond; jealousy | The partner as danger; the crisis seasons are the 8th lord’s |
| 12th lord on the 7th, or 7th lord in the 12th, with the affliction | The distant or private bond | The isolation; the native cut off; the exit season is also the 12th lord’s |
| The Moon debilitated, dark, or in the 8th or 12th, with any of the above | The heart that feels intensely and privately | The native who cannot see it from inside; the reading says so as a description |
The first row is the whole of what most charts have, and the fourth is the one that turns the page’s first section from advice into instruction; the reading counts the planets before it says which.
The Moon and the twelfth: why it is hard to see from inside
The natives who stay longest in a harmful relationship are not the ones with the most afflicted seventh but the ones with the Moon least able to see it: the Moon in the eighth, which normalises crisis; in the twelfth, which keeps its own counsel and tells no one; debilitated in Scorpio, which needs the intensity and reads it as depth; dark, close to the Sun, which cannot see its own need; or with Saturn, which does not ask and is not told. These are the hearts for which the sentence “everyone could see it but me” is literally the chart, and the reading says so as a description of a Moon and not of a failure, because a native who has been told the Moon’s placement stops asking why they did not see and starts asking what their Moon needs in order to see now, which is usually another person’s eyes. The twelfth house adds the isolation: the twelfth lord on the seventh or the partner’s planets clustering in the native’s twelfth is the relationship in which the native’s people were removed one by one, and the reading’s practical sentence is that the people are the exit, since the twelfth’s isolation is undone by the eleventh’s circle, and a native rebuilding one friendship is doing the astrological work as well as the human one. The chart’s view of the mind and the Moon in general is in the mental health and the Moon page, which is read alongside a counsellor and not instead of one.
The exit seasons: when leaving is possible and supported
The one timing this page gives is the exit season, because leaving a harmful relationship is hard and the chart can say when it is less hard. The twelfth lord’s sub-period is the season of departure, in which the native goes, moves, is helped to leave, and the twelfth’s whole range, loss, the far and release, is read in the twelfth lord in the twelve houses; the sixth lord’s sub-period is the season of the fight and the law, in which a case is filed and a protection asked for and won, and the reading of the legal season is in winning court cases through the sixth house; the ninth lord’s sub-period is the season of the helper, the elder, the lawyer, the far place that receives; Jupiter’s transit over the twelfth, in Jupiter through the twelfth, the ninth or the sixth is the year the departure is supported; Saturn’s transit over the seventh is the two and a half years in which the bond is examined and often ended; and the junction between major periods is the season in which a relationship carried by the old period has no carrier in the new, which is the exit that comes with the calendar. The reading names the nearest of these by date and says that the leaving is possible in it and supported, and adds, always, the sentence that where there is immediate danger the exit season is now, whatever the table says, and the chart is consulted afterward for the rebuilding. A native who has already left is told which season they left in, which is almost always one of these, so that they know the chart was with them.
The pull back: the nodes, and what they do not excuse
The native who has left a harmful relationship and is pulled back to it, sometimes more than once, is the commonest reader of this page, and the chart names the pull without excusing it. Rahu on the seventh or with Venus is the appetite for the intensity, the sense that ordinary partnership is flat after it; Ketu on the seventh or with the Moon is the familiarity, the harmful partner who feels known, the recognition the Ketu page reads; the Rahu-Ketu axis across the first and seventh, or the fifth and eleventh, is the relationship that repeats, which the karmic relationships page reads; and the sub-periods of Rahu, Ketu and Venus are the seasons the pull is strongest. The reading gives those seasons as the ones to be most careful in, gives the exit seasons as the ones the pull is weakest in, and says the thing that the nodes do not: that the pull is a season and the danger is a fact, and that a feeling with a date on it is easier to sit through than one that seems permanent. The pull back is one of the things a counsellor and the native’s people are for, and the chart’s contribution is the calendar of when the pull will be strongest, which lets the native and their people plan for it rather than be surprised by it. Where the pull is toward a partner who has harmed, the reading does not read the partner’s chart for whether they have changed; it reads the native’s for the season, and leaves the question of change to time and to the people whose job it is.
What a reading refuses to do here
Five things, stated so that a reader knows what to expect from this site and what to be suspicious of elsewhere. The reading refuses to time a reconciliation into a house it has read as dangerous: no “he will change in Jupiter’s period”, no window for the return, however the native asks. It refuses to sell a remedy: no stone, no ritual, no puja that makes a harmful partner safe, since none does and the money is the native’s exit fund. It refuses to read the partner’s chart as a verdict on conduct, in either direction: neither “he is abusive” nor “he is not”, since the chart holds neither. It refuses to give a timing for anything before the safety question has been asked and answered, which is the first thing in a consultation of this kind and stops the consultation if the answer requires it. And it refuses to tell a native that the pattern is their fate: a chart with an afflicted seventh chooses differently in its carrier seasons, and the reading names them. What the reading does instead is on this page: the line, the difference between heat and harm, the seasons of vulnerability and of exit, the pull’s calendar, and the sentence about the Moon that lets a native stop blaming themselves for not seeing. That is less than the internet promises and it is everything the chart actually contains.
A worked chart, read after she had left
A Virgo lagna woman, particulars altered, who came six months after leaving a four-year marriage in which there had been fear, and who asked two things: why she had not seen it, and whether she would choose it again. Her chart: Jupiter, lord of the fourth and seventh, in Pisces in the seventh, its own sign, with Mars, lord of the third and eighth, and Saturn, lord of the fifth and sixth, beside it, and Rahu in Pisces too: the seventh house holding the bond’s own lord, dignified, and Mars, Saturn and Rahu together, the signature of this page in its fullest form, with the sixth lord among the three. The Moon, lord of the eleventh, in Aquarius in the sixth. Venus, lord of the second and ninth, in Libra in the second, its own sign. Mercury, the lagna lord, in Virgo in the lagna, its own sign, with Ketu, opposite the Rahu in the seventh. The Sun, lord of the twelfth, in Libra with Venus, debilitated. The Moon in the sixth, the heart living inside the daily quarrel and normalising it, with the nodal axis across her first and seventh: that was the answer to her first question, and it was given as a description of a Moon. The marriage had been made in Saturn-Rahu, the sixth lord’s major period with Rahu’s sub-period, the two planets of the affliction, and the four years had run through the rest of Saturn-Rahu, in which it had become what it was, and Saturn-Jupiter, the seventh lord’s sub-period, in which the dignified Jupiter had made it look sound from outside while it was not.
She had left in the first months of Mercury-Mercury, the lagna lord’s major period opening at the junction with Saturn’s, with Jupiter transiting Leo, her twelfth, which is the exit season the section above names twice over: the junction at which the old period’s relationship had no carrier in the new, and the native’s own planet’s season with the departure supported. She had not known it and had done it anyway, which the reading told her, and which she found steadying. The second question, whether she would choose it again, was answered from the pattern and the seasons: the seventh holds the affliction and the dignified lord together, so the seventh describes both the partner who harms and the partner who is sound, and the sub-period decides which is met; Saturn’s and Rahu’s seasons had met the first, and Mercury’s seventeen years, the lagna lord’s, with Mercury-Venus, the second and ninth lord’s sub-period, three years on, would meet the second. The pull’s seasons were named, Mercury-Ketu next, twelve months, with Ketu on her lagna and Rahu on her seventh, the familiarity’s season, in which she should expect to miss what had harmed her and should plan for it with the friend she had rebuilt; and the reading refused, when she asked, to read his chart for whether he had changed, and said why. She used the twelve months as planned. The chart had said, in order, the Moon that could not see, the affliction’s seasons that had chosen, the exit season she had used, and the carrier seasons ahead, and it had said none of the things the internet would have said, which is why it was useful.
Frequently asked questions
Can astrology tell if a relationship is abusive?
Not as a verdict; a chart reads tendency and season and never conduct, so no chart says that a person is or will be violent. What the chart can show is the difference between heat, Mars in the seventh as a quality with a season, and the signature of harm, Mars, Saturn and Rahu together on the seventh, fourth or seventh lord with the sixth or eighth lord’s touch, and the seasons in which that signature is strongest. Where there is fear in a relationship, safety comes before any reading, and this page begins there.
What does a toxic relationship look like in the birth chart?
In the native’s own chart, the seventh afflicted by Mars, Saturn and Rahu together, the seventh lord in the sixth or eighth with that affliction, the sixth or eighth lord on the seventh, and the twelfth lord on the seventh for the isolation; with a Moon in the eighth or twelfth, debilitated or dark, which is the native who cannot see it from inside. One malefic is a quality and two a strain; it is the three together, with the enemy’s or the danger’s house involved, that this page reads as harm, and it reads them as seasons, not sentences.
Why do I keep choosing the wrong partner?
Because the pattern is in the houses and the period, not in your worth: Venus with Rahu or Saturn, the seventh lord in the sixth or eighth, Mars-Saturn on the seventh or the Moon in the eighth draw a native to the intense and the controlling because the seventh describes that partner and the fifth recognises them. The same seventh chooses differently in a Jupiter or seventh lord’s sub-period, and the reading names that season; the pattern is also one of the things a counsellor is for, alongside the chart and not instead of it.
When is the right time to leave a harmful relationship according to astrology?
Now, where there is immediate danger, whatever the table says. Otherwise the chart names the exit seasons in which leaving is possible and supported: the twelfth lord’s sub-period for the departure, the sixth lord’s for the legal fight and the protection, the ninth lord’s for the helper and the far place, Jupiter’s transit over the twelfth, ninth or sixth as the supported year, Saturn’s transit over the seventh as the examination, and the junction between major periods as the exit that comes with the calendar. The reading gives the nearest by date.
Why do I keep going back to a partner who hurt me?
The chart names the pull without excusing it: Rahu on the seventh or with Venus is the appetite for the intensity, Ketu on the seventh or with the Moon is the harmful partner who feels known, and the Rahu, Ketu and Venus sub-periods are the seasons the pull is strongest. The reading gives those seasons to plan for and the exit seasons in which the pull is weakest, and says that the pull is a season and the danger is a fact. The pull back is what a counsellor and your people are for; the chart gives the calendar.
Will my abusive partner change in the next dasha?
This site does not answer that question from a chart, and a reader should be suspicious of anyone who does. A reading here refuses to time a reconciliation into a house it has read as dangerous, refuses to read a partner’s chart as a verdict on conduct in either direction, and refuses to sell a remedy that makes a harmful partner safe, since none does. What it reads is the native’s own chart for the seasons of vulnerability and of exit, and it leaves the question of another person’s change to time and to the people whose work that is.
Is there any remedy in astrology for an abusive marriage?
No stone, ritual or puja makes a harmful partner safe, and the money spent on one is the native’s exit fund. The only things the chart offers are the ones on this page: the line that safety comes first, the difference between heat and harm, the seasons of vulnerability, the exit seasons in which leaving is possible and supported, the calendar of the pull back, and the description of the Moon that lets a native stop blaming themselves for not seeing. That is less than the internet promises and everything the chart contains.

The line first, the seasons second, and nothing the chart does not contain.
A relationship consultation in this situation asks the safety question before anything else, reads your chart for heat against harm and for the seasons of vulnerability and exit in your dasha table, names the seasons the pull back will be strongest so they can be planned for, and refuses to time a return or read another person's chart as a verdict.
