Three people ask this question in three states of mind. The woman about to marry, or about to have a child, who wants to know whether her career survives it. The person three years into a break, whose CV has a gap and whose confidence has a larger one, asking when and how the way back opens. And the person who stepped out for health or exhaustion and is not sure they want to step back in. The chart treats all three the same way: a break is an event of specific houses, it happens in specific periods, and the return is timed like any other entry into work. The gap is legible, and so is its end.

Three kinds of break, three sets of houses
A break for marriage or relocation runs through the seventh house, the spouse, and the fourth, the home and the city the native lives in. When a career pauses because a marriage moved the native to another place or into another family’s expectations, the seventh and fourth lords are active and the tenth is not.
A break for children runs through the fifth house, children, and again the fourth, the home that has to hold them. The fifth lord’s periods around a birth are the periods in which careers pause most often, and the pause is longer when the fourth is also strong, because a strong fourth house holds a person at home with more force than a weak one.
A break for health, exhaustion or a deliberate sabbatical runs through the sixth, the eighth and the twelfth: illness and its recovery, the abrupt interruption, and the withdrawal. Ketu is the planet of this third kind, and a Ketu period or transit on the tenth or the sixth produces the break nobody planned and the native does not regret.
Knowing which kind of break the chart shows is the first step, because the three return by different routes: the marriage break returns through the fourth lord settling or the seventh lord’s period ending, the children break through the fifth lord’s period ending and a sixth or tenth lord’s beginning, the health break through the sixth lord’s recovery period or the eleventh lord’s.
Will I work after marriage? The seventh and tenth together
The question is asked before the marriage, and the chart answers it from the relationship between the seventh house and the tenth. When the seventh lord sits in the sixth or the tenth, or connects with the tenth lord, the marriage supports the career or requires it: the spouse works, the household needs two incomes, or the marriage itself brings the native into a working world. When the seventh lord sits in the fourth or the twelfth, or connects with the fourth lord, the marriage pulls toward home, the spouse’s city or the spouse’s family, and the career pauses unless the tenth is strong enough to resist. When the tenth lord sits in the seventh, the career runs through the partnership: the spouse’s business, the spouse’s contacts, or a joint venture, and this placement produces the couple who work together more often than any other.
The planets colour it. A strong Venus and Moon in the career houses give a native whose working life bends toward the relationship and the home without breaking; Saturn or the Sun there give a native whose career does not bend and whose marriage has to accommodate it. Rahu on the seventh gives the marriage that takes the native abroad, and the career question becomes a foreign-work question, treated in job abroad and work relocation.
The spouse’s chart is the other half of this reading, because a partner whose own seventh and fourth lords say “home” and a partner whose say “two careers” produce different marriages from the same native’s chart. Where the marriage is not yet fixed, the native’s own chart gives the tendency and the honest reading says so: this chart bends toward home under a marriage placed in the fourth, and keeps its career under a marriage placed in the tenth, and the choice of partner will decide which.
The signatures that produce a break
The tenth lord in the fourth or the twelfth is the natal signature of a career that pauses. In the fourth, the career gives way to the home, property, a parent or the home region for a period and then returns; in the twelfth, the career goes abroad, behind the scenes, or into a gap, and returns changed. Neither placement denies a career. Both describe one with an intermission.
Ketu in the tenth, or on the fourth-tenth axis with Rahu, gives detachment from the career at a point in life and a gap that feels chosen even when circumstances chose it. Ketu in the fourth, with Rahu in the tenth, gives the reverse: ambition in the career and detachment at home, and a break that is short and resented.
The fifth lord’s sub-periods are the periods of children and of the pause that comes with them, and the fourth lord’s sub-periods are the periods of home taking precedence. A twelfth lord’s sub-period, or a Ketu sub-period, produces the withdrawal by loss of interest or by circumstance. Saturn’s transit over the tenth house or the tenth lord during any of these turns a leave into a gap, because Saturn restructures the job while the native is away from it, and the role is no longer there to return to.
The Moon’s condition matters more here than in most career readings. The Moon is the mind, the mother and the home, and an afflicted Moon with a strong fourth house gives the person whose break extends past its cause because the return feels impossible rather than because the chart forbids it. That is a real condition and the reading should name it gently.
Children and the fifth house pause
A birth is a fifth-house event, and in the mother’s chart it falls in a period of the fifth lord, a planet in the fifth, or Jupiter, with Jupiter’s transit over the fifth or the lagna as the trigger. The career pause that follows is read from what the fifth lord is connected to. A fifth lord connected to the tenth or the sixth gives a short pause and a return to the same work; the career and the children share a planet, and the planet does both. A fifth lord connected to the fourth or the twelfth gives the long pause, the home closing around the child, and a return that needs a different planet’s period. A fifth lord that is also the tenth lord, as for Aries and Libra lagnas, gives the working mother whose career and children are inseparable in the reading and, often, in the life: teaching, paediatrics, work from home, the children’s school as a career.
Health and sabbatical breaks
A break for health falls in a sixth-lord or eighth-lord sub-period, or under Saturn’s transit over the lagna, the Moon or the sixth, and the chart reads it as a period of vulnerability and recovery, not as a diagnosis; medical questions belong to a doctor, and the astrologer’s part is the timing. The recovery, and with it the return to work, falls in the eleventh lord’s sub-period, the fifth lord’s, or the period of a benefic aspecting the sixth, and Jupiter’s transit over the lagna or the sixth is the trigger. A sabbatical or burnout break without illness is Ketu’s, or the twelfth lord’s, and its end is the next sub-period with a stake in the sixth, tenth or eleventh, exactly as for any other gap. The reading for health breaks should say plainly that a Saturn transit over the Moon, the central stretch of Sade Sati, is a period in which many people step back from work and most step forward again when it passes.
How long a break lasts
The length of a break is read from the dasha table, not from the calendar. A break begins in a sub-period of the fourth, fifth, twelfth lord or Ketu, and it lasts until the next sub-period whose lord rules, occupies or aspects the sixth, tenth or eleventh house. That may be the very next sub-period, which gives a break of one to three years, or it may be two or three sub-periods away, which gives the five-to-eight-year gap that people fear is permanent and is not. The reading can therefore say, at the start of a break, roughly how long it will run, and that is the most useful thing it can say to a person deciding whether to keep a professional membership, a licence or a network alive.
When the break begins near the end of a major period, the return usually falls in the first career sub-period of the next major period, and the work that returns belongs to the new major period’s planet rather than the old one’s. That is the mechanism behind the very common story of a woman who left one field for her children and came back, six years later, into a different one.
Timing the return
The return is a job entry, and it is timed like one: a sub-period of the sixth lord, the tenth lord or the eleventh lord, or of a planet placed in those houses, with Jupiter transiting the sixth, tenth or eleventh or aspecting the tenth lord as the trigger, and Saturn in an upachaya house from the lagna or the Moon in support. Two additions apply to re-entry. The fourth lord’s condition says whether the home releases the native: a fourth lord whose sub-period is ending, or a fourth lord aspected by Jupiter in transit, is the home letting go. And the third lord’s sub-period, the house of initiative, brings the return that the native makes happen rather than waits for: the course, the certification, the application sent on a Tuesday morning after four years of not sending it. A third-lord sub-period arriving during a break is the window to act in, even if the offer itself lands in the following sub-period.

The mode of return: same job, part-time, own work, new field
The lord of the return sub-period says what kind of work comes back. A sixth-lord sub-period returns the native to employment in the same field, often at a lower level than they left, rising later. A tenth-lord sub-period returns them at or above the level they left. An eleventh-lord sub-period, or a strong eleventh with a third-lord sub-period, returns them to part-time, remote or freelance work, the gains without the office, which is the commonest mode of return for mothers of young children and suits the chart with a strong fourth and eleventh. A seventh-lord sub-period returns them to work on their own account, a practice or a small business, and whether that mode is supported is the reading in Job or Business? and, for the freelance version, in Self-Employment, Freelancing and Side Business. A ninth-lord sub-period returns them through study into a new field, and the change of field itself is read in Job Change and Career Change.
The fourth-tenth axis and the working parent
The fourth house is home and the tenth is the world, and they are opposite for a reason. A chart with both strong gives the working parent who does both and feels the strain of both, and the strain is not a flaw in the chart but the price of the placement. A chart with the fourth much stronger than the tenth gives the parent who is happier at home than the family expects and should not be pushed back to work by other people’s idea of a career. A chart with the tenth much stronger gives the parent whose break is short and whose return is early, and who should not be made to feel that this is a failure of care. Ketu on either end of the axis detaches the native from that end for a period, and Rahu on either end inflates it. The reading of the axis is often the most useful part of this consultation, because it tells a person which of the two pulls is theirs and which is the family’s.
A worked chart: a four-year gap after childbirth
A Pisces lagna chart, identifying detail removed. For this lagna Jupiter rules the lagna and the tenth, the Moon rules the fifth, Mercury rules the fourth and seventh, the Sun rules the sixth, Saturn rules the eleventh and twelfth, Venus the third and eighth, Mars the second and ninth. Jupiter, the lagna and tenth lord, is exalted in Cancer in the fifth with Venus. The Moon, lord of the fifth, sits in Gemini in the fourth with Ketu. The Sun and Mercury sit together in Leo in the sixth, the Sun in its own sign. Saturn is in Capricorn, its own sign, in the eleventh. Mars is in Scorpio, its own sign, in the ninth. Rahu is in Sagittarius in the tenth.
Read it for breaks and returns before reading the history. The tenth lord exalted in the fifth: a career tied to children, creativity or teaching, and one that will pause for the fifth house. The fifth lord in the fourth with Ketu: children who close the home around the native, and a detachment from the world during their infancy. The seventh lord Mercury in the sixth with the sixth lord: a marriage that supports work and a spouse who works. Rahu in the tenth: ambition in the career, technology, and a return that will want scale. Saturn in its own sign in the eleventh: gains that come late and hold. Everything needed to say, at twenty-five, that this chart would take a long break for children and come back.
Rahu’s major period ran from her early twenties, Rahu in the tenth. Rahu-Jupiter brought the rise in a technology firm, the tenth lord’s sub-period. Rahu-Saturn brought the marriage’s arrangements and a slower stretch. Rahu-Mercury, the seventh lord’s sub-period, brought the marriage itself and a relocation to her husband’s city, the seventh and fourth together, with the seventh lord in the sixth keeping her in work through it. Rahu-Ketu, Ketu sitting in the fourth with the fifth lord, brought her daughter and the start of the break; she left her job in that sub-period, thirteen months long. Rahu-Venus followed, Venus sitting with the tenth lord in the fifth but ruling the eighth and the third, three years in which the break continued and, toward its end, in the third lord’s own sub-period, she took a certification course from home. The reading, done in that stretch, pointed to Rahu-Sun, the sixth lord’s sub-period, own sign, in the sixth, as the return window, with Jupiter’s transit due over her sixth house inside it.
She returned to work in Rahu-Sun, remotely at first, a little under four years after leaving, when Jupiter transited her sixth house. Rahu-Moon, the fifth lord in the fourth, kept the arrangement part-time and from home, the eleventh house giving the gains without the office. Rahu-Mars, the ninth lord in its own sign, brought further study. Jupiter’s major period began at forty, the exalted tenth lord’s, and she is now in a senior role in the same field, in the sub-periods of a planet that rules her career and sits in the house of her children. The break was four years. The chart had said it would be a long one, that it would end in the sixth lord’s sub-period, and that the return would be from home first. All three held.
What the reading cannot do
It cannot decide for a family. The chart shows the pulls and the periods; the choices about who works, who stays, and when, belong to the people making them. It cannot see the partner’s chart unless it is provided, and the marriage half of this reading is half a reading without it. It is not a medical opinion, and a health break should be discussed with a doctor before it is discussed with an astrologer. It depends on the birth time, since the fourth, fifth, seventh and tenth are whole signs and a lagna error of one sign changes which lord is which. And it should never be used to tell a person that their chart forbids a return; breaks in the chart are intermissions with legible ends, and the reading that names the end is the one worth having.
