Three selves attend every settlement decision. The lagna’s self is circumstance, what actually happens, and the Parashari half of this cluster read it in full. The Atmakaraka’s self is the agenda underneath, and the soul-audit and Karakamsha pages read that. The third self is the image, the life as it appears, to the family, the community, the marriage market, the self watching itself, and Jaimini gives it its own ascendant: the Arudha Lagna, the reflection point, where the world’s version of you is domiciled.
A settlement page for the image-self needs no apology on this subcontinent, where migrations are announced before they are decided, where a household’s standing can be denominated in one member’s foreign address, and where the question of return is negotiated with an audience real or imagined. The Arudha reads all of that: which charts are pulled abroad by appearance itself, which emigrants remain of-the-village in everyone’s story including their own, and why some cannot come home long after the wanting has turned, because the image cannot afford the ticket.

Finding the Arudha Lagna
Count the houses from the lagna to its lord, then count the same number again onward from the lord; the sign you land on carries the Arudha Lagna. Jaimini adds one adjustment: when the count lands the Arudha in the 1st or the 7th from the house being reflected, tradition moves it to the 10th from that landing, because a reflection cannot sit on the object or its exact opposite. The Arudha calculator applies the rule and the exception correctly from birth details, which spares the finger-counting and the commonest computation error in one step.
What the point means is worth one plain paragraph before using it. The Arudha is maya in the technical sense, the projected life, and it is not less real for being projection: careers are built on it, marriages are arranged by it, and migrations are financed for it. The lagna’s events and the Arudha’s appearances usually travel together and periodically split, and the splits are where this page’s readings live.
The Arudha’s house, read for this question
The Arudha in the 12th from the lagna is the known-for-elsewhere signature: the image domiciled in the house of distance, so the world’s version of this person is the one who is away, the foreign-returned, the one abroad. Such charts often find the image running ahead of the fact, spoken of as leaving before any plan exists, and the eventual migration lands into a story already written for it. The reflection also inherits the 12th’s expense flavour, an image that costs to maintain, which the remittance section below picks up.
The Arudha in the 9th makes the image a traveller’s: the fortunate one, the educated-abroad one, the family’s pilgrim, and it is satisfied by journeys in a way that can quietly relieve the pressure to settle, the visible trips doing the image’s work without any residence.
The Arudha in the 4th is this page’s most consequential placement and the least noticed: the image domiciled at the base. Whatever the body does, the world’s version of this person, and their own inner audience, remains of-the-village, of the mohalla, the son or daughter of that house, and emigration on such a chart is lived as a long absence from the real address rather than a change of it. These are the emigrants who rebuild the ancestral house from abroad and are buried, in every story that matters, at home.
The distance itself carries a reading, whichever houses are involved: an Arudha far from the lagna, and especially across the horizon from it, belongs to lives whose visible version is conducted somewhere other than where they are rooted, the pattern the opening page of this cluster flagged, and diaspora charts show it constantly, the life performed in one country and grounded in another.
Gains and drains on the image
Jaimini reads the houses from the Arudha for the image’s own economy, and two of them earn their place in a settlement analysis.
The 11th from the Arudha is what feeds the image, its gains and its public increase, and when the foreign significators stand there or its lord ties to the 12th house complex, status itself is fed from abroad. This is the remittance-glory signature, familiar in every emigrant-sending district: the household whose standing rises with each transfer, the foreign address doing for the family name what no local success quite could. It is a genuine gain and a genuine engine, and charts carrying it experience the pull abroad partly as the image’s appetite, which the drivers section below sorts from the other pulls.
The 12th from the Arudha is the image’s expenditure and its invisible wing, what the appearance spends and what it declines to show. Foreign matters seated here give the double life every long-distance family knows: the years abroad that the community narrates as triumph while the person lives them as cost, the sacrifices edited out of the story told at weddings. Reading this house to a client is often the first time the invisible half has been named out loud, and the naming itself does work.
The nodes on the reflection
Rahu with the Arudha inflates the image and tilts it foreign: the larger-than-life version of the person circulates ahead of them, the abroad story grows in the telling, and the pressure to live up to the projection becomes its own migration engine. It is the classic signature of the emigrant whose community reputation is bigger than their bank account, and its risk is exactly that gap. Ketu with the Arudha does the opposite work: the image thins, the person slips out of the community’s story when they leave, the forgotten emigrant whose departure closed over like water. It costs less than it sounds, these charts are freed from the audience the Rahu charts perform for, and their returns, when they come, are the easiest in this whole analysis, because no image has to be paid off at the border.
The three drivers
With all three instruments now on the table, the triptych this Jaimini group has been building closes into one working distinction: what is actually driving a given migration, and what each driver predicts about the aftermath.
| Driver | Signature | The aftermath it predicts |
|---|---|---|
| Circumstance | Lagna-side structure strong, soul and image quiet | The move completes and is worn lightly; staying or returning stays a live, low-drama option |
| Soul | Atmakaraka or Karakamsha triad engaged with the foreign | Pursued past every setback; the residence, once gained, is inhabited and kept |
| Image | Arudha in the 12th, Rahu on the Arudha, gains-to-image fed from abroad | The move performs well and lives unevenly; satisfaction depends on the audience, and the return question is negotiated with it |
None of the three is condemned, and the image-driven row deserves that said explicitly, because it is the one the culture mocks and the mockery is cheap. Standing is a real good in a real economy of families; migrations made for it have educated generations and rebuilt villages. What the reading offers is not a verdict on the driver but a forecast of where the satisfaction will and will not come from, so the mover can provision for the difference in advance.
The return-blocker
The Arudha’s last contribution is to a question the stay-or-return analysis carries from the other side: the emigrant who wants to come home and cannot, years after the wanting turned, and cannot say why. Often the why is the image. A return reads, in the community’s ledger, as the abroad story ending, and a chart whose standing is fed from the 11th-from-Arudha abroad, or whose Rahu-inflated projection has been circulating for a decade, faces a real cost at the border that has nothing to do with visas: the image must be paid off, downgraded, or rewritten, and the person defers the return season after season to avoid the transaction.
Naming the blocker is most of the help. Returns negotiated openly with the image, the new venture announced, the homecoming framed, the story given somewhere to land, complete at rates the deferred ones never reach, and charts with Ketu on the Arudha, holding no image to pay off, come and go across that border with an ease the others can borrow from once they see what the toll actually was.
Questions people ask
What does the Arudha Lagna show about foreign settlement?
The image layer of the question: whether the visible life is domiciled elsewhere, whether status itself is fed from abroad, and whether a migration is being driven by appearance alongside circumstance and soul. It also names the commonest invisible return-blocker, the image that cannot afford the homecoming.
What does the Arudha Lagna in the 12th house mean?
The known-for-elsewhere signature: the world’s version of the person is the one who is away, often spoken of as leaving before any plan exists, so the eventual migration lands into a story already written. The reflection also inherits the 12th’s costs, an image that is expensive to maintain.
My Arudha Lagna is far from my lagna. What does that mean?
The visible life conducted somewhere other than where the person is rooted, a pattern diaspora charts show constantly: performed in one country, grounded in another. Read the specific houses for the texture, and expect the splits between event and appearance to be this chart’s recurring theme.
What is the difference between the lagna and the Arudha Lagna?
The lagna is what happens; the Arudha is what it looks like, the reflection the world receives and the person partly lives inside. They usually travel together and periodically split, and Jaimini reads the Arudha separately precisely because careers, marriages and migrations are transacted on the appearance as much as the event.
What does Rahu with the Arudha Lagna mean for going abroad?
An inflated, foreign-tilted image: the larger-than-life version circulates ahead of the person, the abroad story grows in the telling, and living up to the projection becomes its own migration engine. Its known risk is the gap between reputation and account balance, and its returns are the hardest to negotiate.
What does Ketu with the Arudha Lagna mean?
The thinned image, the emigrant the community’s story closes over, and it is kinder than it sounds: no audience to perform for, no projection to maintain, and the easiest returns in this whole analysis, because nothing has to be paid off at the border.
My Arudha is in the 4th house but I live abroad. How does that work?
The image stays domiciled at the base while the body emigrates: in every story that matters, including your own inner one, you remain of that house and that place, and the years abroad are lived as a long absence rather than a change of address. Such charts rebuild the ancestral home from a distance and plan, openly or not, around an eventual return.
What does the 11th from the Arudha show about foreign gains?
What feeds the image, and when it ties to the foreign houses, standing itself is remitted from abroad: the household whose name rises with each transfer. It is a real engine and a real gain, and charts carrying it should know that part of their pull abroad is the image’s own appetite.
Why do some people settled abroad feel unable to return to India?
Among the astrological answers, the image toll: a return reads as the abroad story ending, and where standing has been fed from the foreign address for years, the homecoming carries a cost no visa office charges. Returns negotiated openly with the image, the story given somewhere to land, complete at rates the endlessly deferred ones never reach.
How is the Arudha Lagna calculated, and what is the exception rule?
Count from the lagna to its lord, then the same count onward from the lord; the landing sign holds the Arudha. When the landing falls in the 1st or 7th from the reflected house, tradition moves it to the 10th from the landing, since a reflection cannot sit on its object or directly opposite it. The calculator applies both steps correctly.
Is an image-driven migration a bad reason to go abroad?
No, and the mockery it attracts is cheap: standing is a real good in a real economy of families, and image-driven moves have educated generations. What the reading forecasts is where satisfaction will and will not come from, so the mover provisions for the difference instead of discovering it.
How do I find my Arudha Lagna right now?
The Arudha calculator computes it with the exception rule applied, and the kundali calculator places it alongside the lagna, the karakas and the foreign houses for the three-driver reading this page describes.
Want this read in your own chart?
Reading your own chart is good for learning and unreliable for deciding, and the image layer defeats self-reading twice over, because the Arudha is partly the story you tell yourself, and the instrument is being asked to examine its own narrator.

It runs 30 to 40 minutes by voice, in English, Hindi or Punjabi, and you can follow up by message afterwards. I do not tell people which country to move to, because a chart does not say that.
