What Yamakantaka is
The upagrahas are calculated points, not physical bodies. They have no light of their own, yet the classical tradition assigns them definite portfolios, and Yamakantaka’s portfolio is unusual. Phaladeepika, the text most often cited on this family of points, states that while Gulika is powerful in causing difficulty, Yamakantaka is powerful in causing good, and that its effects resemble Jupiter’s. Later tradition calls it the son of Brihaspati and reads it as a point of timely support: help that arrives without being arranged, doors that open a little earlier than expected, protection in the affairs of the house it occupies.
Because it is a point rather than a planet, Yamakantaka does not act on its own. It colours what it touches. A Yamakantaka conjunct the lagna, the Moon, a house cusp or a major planet is worth noting; one standing alone in an empty sign is a minor testimony. The sensible use is confirmation. When a dasha already promises a result, a well placed Yamakantaka in the relevant house is one more voice saying yes. How the position is computed
Yamakantaka belongs to the kala-vela group, the six upagrahas derived from the division of the day. The method is old and precise. Take the span from sunrise to sunset for a day birth, or sunset to the next sunrise for a night birth, and divide it into eight equal parts. The parts belong to the weekday lords in order, starting from the lord of the day itself for a day birth, and from the fifth planet in that order for a night birth. After Saturn’s part comes one lordless part, then the sequence continues. Jupiter’s part is found, the exact moment at the middle of that part is taken, and the sign and degree rising on the eastern horizon at that moment is Yamakantaka.
This is why the point cannot be looked up in a table the way a Sun sign can. It depends on the date, the exact time, the place, the season’s day length and the weekday, all at once. Two people born the same day in different cities carry different Yamakantakas. It is also why values differ between websites. Some schools take the beginning of the planet’s part, some the middle, some the end, and the three answers can sit a full sign apart. Sunrise definitions differ too. This calculator follows the defaults Jagannatha Hora ships with: the middle of the part for Yamakantaka, Kala, Mrityu and Ardhaprahara, the beginning of Saturn’s part for Gulika, the middle of Saturn’s part for Mandi, and Hindu sunrise, the moment the Sun’s centre crosses the horizon without refraction. Gulika and Mandi: the two Saturn points
Most people arrive at upagrahas through Gulika, because South Indian charts print it by default and because the muhurta tradition treats its daily window with respect. Gulika and Mandi are both cast from Saturn’s part of the day, which is why software shows two separate Saturn points: Gulika from the beginning of the part, Mandi from its middle. Some lineages treat the names as one point and pick a single convention; Jagannatha Hora keeps both, and so does this calculator.
Read them the way a careful practitioner does. They mark where Saturnine themes concentrate: delay, weight, matters that ask for patience and honest handling. In muhurta work their windows are avoided for beginnings. In natal work their sign, nakshatra and dispositor are weighed, especially in longevity and illness questions, always alongside the full chart. A Gulika rising in the first house is common, roughly one birth in twelve carries it, and it does not ruin a chart. It asks the native to build slowly and keep their word, which is advice most charts could use anyway.
The remaining upagrahas
Kala is the Sun’s portion and carries a Rahu-like sharpness; Mrityu is the portion of Mars, and despite the alarming name it is read as a sensitivity marker for Mars themes, accidents, haste, conflict, never as a verdict on lifespan; Ardhaprahara belongs to Mercury and behaves the way Mercury does, taking the colour of its associations. The five Sun-based points, Dhuma, Vyatipata, Parivesha, Indrachapa and Upaketu, are derived arithmetically from the Sun’s longitude rather than from rising times, and appear mainly in Parashari discussions of affliction and remedy. Yamakantaka is not Yamaganda Kalam
The similar names cause daily confusion, so the distinction deserves its own section. Yamakantaka is a natal point: a fixed degree in your birth chart, cast once, read for life. Yamaganda Kalam is a daily window: one eighth of each day, ruled by Jupiter’s position in the weekday sequence, avoided in South Indian muhurta practice for starting new ventures, exactly like Rahu Kalam and Gulika Kalam. Same underlying eight-part machinery, two entirely different uses. Since both come from the same computation, the calculator above prints your natal points and the three kalam windows for your birth date together, and the windows shift every day with sunrise, so today’s Yamaganda Kalam at your city is a panchang question, not a birth chart one.

What is the difference between Yamakantaka and Yamagandam?
Yamakantaka is a fixed point in the birth chart, cast from the rising degree at the middle of Jupiter’s portion of the birth day. Yamagandam, or Yamaganda Kalam, is a daily ninety-minute window avoided for new beginnings in muhurta practice. The names share a root; the uses do not overlap.
Why does my Yamakantaka differ on other websites?

Does Yamakantaka give wealth?

Wealth still needs the houses of wealth, their lords and a supportive dasha; Yamakantaka smooths the road those factors build.
Is Gulika in the 1st house bad?
